Arusha National Park, located just 25 km east of Arusha city in northern Tanzania, is one of the country’s most beautiful and diverse protected areas. Although relatively small (about 552 square kilometers), the park offers an impressive variety of landscapes, from lush rainforests and volcanic craters to sparkling lakes and the majestic peak of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain.
The park is ideal for day trips and short safaris, offering a peaceful and scenic wildlife experience away from the busier parks of the Northern Circuit.
Arusha National Park features a surprising mix of wildlife for its size. Visitors can expect to see giraffes, buffalos, zebras, colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, waterbucks, and a variety of antelope species. The park’s forests provide a natural haven for primates, especially the black-and-white colobus. Though large predators are rarely seen inside the park, the diversity of smaller mammals, abundant birdlife, and peaceful nature make it an excellent destination for relaxed game viewing.
Arusha National Park offers a wider range of activities than most Tanzanian parks. Guided game drives explore the craters, lakes, and forests, while canoeing on the Momella Lakes provides unique close-up wildlife encounters from the water. The park is also famous for its walking safaris, escorted by rangers, allowing guests to approach giraffes, buffalos, and primates on foot. For hikers, Mount Meru provides an excellent multi-day trekking adventure and a perfect acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro.
Accommodation is available in and around Arusha city, including boutique lodges, luxury hotels, and charming safari lodges just outside the park. Staying nearby ensures quick access for early morning activities such as hiking or canoeing. For trekkers, mountain huts on Mount Meru offer simple overnight stays during the ascent.
