Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most spectacular wildlife destinations, famous for its massive elephant herds, towering baobab trees, and untouched wilderness. Located in the Manyara region, the park covers 2,850 square kilometers and forms part of the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit along with Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara.
Named after the Tarangire River, the only permanent water source in the area, the park becomes a wildlife hotspot during the dry season as thousands of animals migrate here in search of water.
Tarangire is famous for its enormous elephant populations—sometimes seen in herds of over 300. The park also hosts buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions, leopards, and the highly sought-after tree-climbing pythons of the Silale Swamps. It’s also one of Tanzania’s finest birding destinations, with more than 500 species including hornbills, bateleurs, lovebirds, and herons. The river ensures consistent animal sightings, especially during the dry season migration unique to Tarangire.
The Serengeti offers luxury tented camps, mid-range lodges, mobile migration camps, and exclusive safari retreats. Options are available both inside the park and in private concessions for added privacy.
Visitors typically explore Tarangire through guided game drives at different times of day to maximize sightings. The park is also known for excellent birdwatching safaris and seasonal walking safaris offered by some lodges just outside the boundaries. Its relatively quiet nature makes it ideal for slower, immersive wildlife viewing and photography.
